Dr. Shirlea North received her doctorate of physical therapy at Marymount University in Arlington, VA. She began her career treating geriatric and neurologically involved clients and grew her passion within the specialties of pelvic and lymphatic health as to bring a truly holistic approach to her clients’ optimal health. Her specialty training and certifications in pelvic floor dysfunction include a variety of client populations such as perinatal care, men’s health, peri/postmenopausal care, and transgender care for all adults. She is a trauma-informed therapist that treats all genders and is queer friendly.
Dr. North also holds a specialization with lymphatic conditions including lipedema and continues to be the only lymphatic physical therapist within Northern Virginia who treats those with lipedema in conservative management. Over the last 15 years, she has developed a truly collaborative approach with other like-minded healthcare professionals to work in conjunction with her services to better serve her clients.
Her interest in becoming a physical therapist developed from having a congenital condition which required her to work for the first 16 years of her life with rehab specialists and peeked her interest in the amazing healing power of the human body. Also her years as a competitive gymnast reaching Elite and pre-Olympic levels and having subsequent injuries throughout her tenure, she worked with rehab specialists to optimize her own recovery and performance.
When not treating her clients, Dr. North is busy running around town with her two children who are active in their high school marching band and travel soccer activities. When there is a spare moment, you will likely find her and her husband and three dogs outside enjoying a good firepit or hike…of course after an intense workout at their local gym.
